3G Network Shutdown (2022)

3G Phasing Out

Below is information about the 3G phase out that is happening internationally. As we move toward 4G and 5G technology, old cell phones (2012 and older) as well as other electronic devices will cease to work. In addition to the below, we'll soon share the recording from Senior Planet's presentation on this 3G phase out. There are many resources online that discuss this and your cellular phone company likely has information on their website too. What is 3G?

3G is the third generation of wireless mobile telecommunications technology. It is the upgrade over 2G, 2.5G, GPRS and 2.75G EDGE networks, offering faster data transfer, and better voice quality. It was superseded by 4G, and also 5G. This network is based on a set of standards for mobile devices and mobile telecommunications' services and networks that comply with the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specifications by the International Telecommunication Union.

Why is 3G phasing out?

Mobile carriers are shutting down their 3G networks, which rely on older technology, to make room for more advanced network services, including 5G. As a result, many older cell phones will be unable to make or receive calls and texts, including calls to 911, or use data services. This will affect 3G mobile phones and certain older 4G mobile phones that do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE or HD Voice).
